The cloth we buy
We buy worsted wool suiting from mills in Yorkshire, the Scottish Borders and Biella, mostly plain weaves, fine twills and quiet birdseye in the 240gsm to 320gsm range, plus wool-linen for the warmer months and cotton poplin, twill and oxford for shirting. Cloth is chosen for crease recovery and how it takes a press, not for how soft it feels on the roll.

Inside the workshop
The workshop is one long room with a walnut cutting table down the centre, half-finished jackets on the rail against the wall and a north window that gives flat, even light all afternoon. Cloth is rested on the table before it is marked so it can relax, then cut in single layers with shears rather than a rotary blade. Fronts are basted, pressed over a ham, fitted on the stand and pressed again; collars are felled by hand, buttonholes are worked at the machine and finished with a hand bar tack, and hems are blind-stitched so nothing shows on the face of the cloth. A brass tape measure lives on the table edge and every finished garment is measured against the spec sheet before it is pressed, folded in tissue and boxed.
