Size guide: UK 6 to 20 body and flat garment measurements for CROWN TAILORING jackets, trousers, waistcoats, shirts and skirts, with how to measure and how to choose between two sizes.

Our blocks are drafted for a 168cm to 176cm figure with a clean shoulder line. Use the body chart to find your size, then check the flat garment measurements on the product page against something you already wear.

Finding your size

CROWN TAILORING garments are sold in UK sizes 6 to 20. Our blocks are drafted for a figure between 168cm and 176cm tall with a square shoulder, so sleeves and skirt lengths run slightly long compared with high street tailoring. Every product page carries two sets of numbers: the body measurements the size is intended to fit, and the flat garment measurements of the piece itself. Trust the flat measurements. Measure a jacket, trouser or skirt you already own and like, lay it flat, and compare.

How to measure

Wear the underwear you would wear with the garment and keep the tape level and snug, not tight. Bust: around the fullest part, tape flat across the back. Waist: the narrowest point, usually 2cm to 3cm above the navel; bend sideways and the crease is your waist. Hip: the fullest part, roughly 20cm below the waist. Sleeve: from the shoulder bone, over a slightly bent elbow, to the wrist bone. Inside leg: from the crotch seam of well-fitting trousers to the hem.

Standard lengths

Jacket sleeves are set at 60cm from the shoulder seam on UK 6 to 12 and 61.5cm on UK 14 to 20, measured to the wrist bone with the cuff buttons closed. Jacket back lengths are 66cm for the single-breasted, 65cm for the double-breasted and 108cm for the long-line coat jacket, all measured from the base of the collar. Trousers are cut with a 76cm inside leg as standard, with a 5cm hem allowance so a tailor can take them to 71cm without losing the shape of the leg; the wide-leg is cut at 79cm to skim the floor. Pencil skirts finish at 58cm from the waistband, A-line midi skirts at 72cm and the box-pleated wrap at 74cm. Waistcoat front lengths run from 52cm at UK 6 to 57cm at UK 20.

Choosing between two sizes

For jackets and waistcoats, take the larger size. A jacket that pulls across the back or gapes at the button cannot be let out much, whereas the side seams and back seam carry enough allowance to take a jacket in by up to 3cm. For trousers and skirts in cloth containing 2% to 4% elastane, take the smaller size: those pieces relax roughly 1cm through the waist after an hour of wear. In pure wool with no stretch, stay with your measured size. If your bust and hip fall in different sizes, buy separates rather than a set and size each piece to its own key measurement.

Fit character by style

The single-breasted jacket is close through the chest with 8cm of ease over the body measurement, enough to close over a shirt and no more. The double-breasted runs with 10cm of ease because it is meant to be worn buttoned. The long-line coat jacket has 14cm and is drafted to be worn open over a waistcoat. Cigarette-leg trousers are the narrowest cut we make: 34cm hem circumference. Straight-leg is 42cm, wide-leg 56cm. The pencil skirt is true to the hip measurement with 3cm of ease and a walking vent, so it is deliberately close.

Alterations and questions

Trousers and skirts have hem allowance for shortening, and jacket sleeves can be taken up 3cm from the cuff. Any local tailor can do this; we do not alter garments before dispatch. If you are unsure, email your bust, waist, hip and height to support@crowntailoring.shop and we will tell you which size we would send, or check the full range at https://crowntailoring.shop. Unworn pieces can be returned within 14 days with tags attached, so ordering two sizes and sending one back is perfectly reasonable.
